Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a car?
Yes this is a beautiful remote area but there is no public transport close by. The nearest train station is Totnes which is 14 miles away and there is a bus service to Kingsbridge and Dartmouth from Stokenham.
Can you get a supermarket delivery?
Yes, all the major supermarkets deliver to Lamacraft House, however do book your slot in advance especially in the Summer.
The postcode to use is TQ7 2NG and you should give them the house name and to go through the wooden gate at the top. There are also some excellent farm shops locally too.
I have heard the lanes are narrow in Devon
Yes the lanes do have hedgerows that grow over which can make them narrow in places. If you stick to the main roads and avoid the tiny side lanes you should be fine. The farmers are not allowed to cut the hedges in the bird nesting season March-October. The lanes do get busy July and August but you can avoid this if you make sure you go out before 10am and avoid the lunchtime rush on the lanes.
Can you swim at the beaches?
Yes the local beach at Blackpool Sands is tested and is a blue flag beach. The water is crystal clear here. Hallsands beach is a lovely steeply shelving beach that you can swim at without going far out of your depth. It’s also really great for kayaking and paddle boarding too. Lannacombe is sandy and pebbly and is good for surfing. East Portlemouth has sandy beaches that are sheltered in the Salcombe estuary. Hallsands, Torcross, Beesands and Slapton are shingle beaches but the great thing is you don’t have to take the sand home with you.
Is it dark at night?
Yes bring a torch, it’s a wonderful light pollution free area but you will need a torch if you are arriving late at night. The moon is super bright and the stars are unlike anything you’ve seen!
How far is it to a town?
Kingsbridge is 8 miles away and is generally drivable between 20-30 minutes. Dartmouth is 9 miles away which takes around 30 minutes
Salcombe is 15 miles and can take 30-40 minutes however you can drive to East Portlemouth which is 4 miles and take the ferry from East Portlemouth.
