Seven of the best dog friendly beaches in South Devon

Where are the best dog friendly beaches in South Devon and the South Hams? We might be biased, but Start Point is a great place to start your search! Here's our definitive list of dog-friendly beaches within a 20-minute drive of Start Point South Devon

Start Point is a beautiful area on the South Devon coast, and there are several dog-friendly beaches within driving and walking distance from Lamacraft Farm Cottages. Here are a few options:

  1. Mattiscombe Sands - This secluded beach is located just south of Start Point and is accessible via a footpath. It's a great spot for a peaceful walk with your dog, and there are no facilities or services, so make sure to bring everything you need. Drive to Start point Car park or walk within 20-30 minutes.

  2. Beesands Beach - This shingle beach is located just north of Start Point and is a popular spot for dog walkers. There are public toilets and a cafe nearby, and dogs are allowed on the beach year-round. Drive to Beesands to park 15 minutes or 35 minute walk.

  3. Torcross Beach - This long, wide beach is located just north of Start Point and is a popular spot for families and dog walkers. There are public toilets, a cafe, and a pub nearby, and dogs are allowed on the beach year-round. 20 minute drive parking available.

  4. Slapton Sands - This long, pebble beach is located just north of Torcross and is a popular spot for dog walkers. There are public toilets, a cafe, and a pub nearby, and dogs are allowed on the beach year-round. 20 minute drive parking available.

  5. Hallsands beach - A curved beach on the southwest coast path between Beesands and Start Point . The landscape of the beach shifts throughout the year, depending on the tide and the wind sometimes with patches of sand but generally pebbly sheltered and a great spot for swimming you might even spot our local friendly seal! No facilities at this beach apart from parking. 10 minute drive or 20 minute walk.

  6. East Portlemouth - Long golden sandy beaches. Venus cafe and toilets. Parking at Mill bay or at Port Waterhouse, some street parking is available but you need to get there early. Then take the East Portlemouth Ferry over to Salcombe! 20 minute drive to East Portlemouth and then a 5 minute ferry journey.

  7. Lannacombe beach - A beautiful sandy beach with limited parking, accessed down a single-track road that might make you wince as you go over the potholes. No facilities but a beautiful stream running through the beach which alternates between pebble at the top and sand. Also, a  great place to catch a wave surfing. Probably one of our favourite dog walking beaches.

Stay at Lamacraft Farm Cottages and visit all these beautiful beaches. Wisteria Cottage takes up to two dogs and Jasmine and Rose Cottage take up to one dog each, if you'd like to bring more dogs get in contact with us, and we'll see what we can do!

It's always a good idea to check local signage and regulations to make sure you are aware of any restrictions or requirements for dogs on the beach.
