Eight tips to help you plan your holiday with your dog

Going on holiday with your dog can be a wonderful experience, but it requires some planning to ensure that you and your furry friend have a safe and enjoyable time. Here are some top tips for going on holiday with your dog in South Devon.

  1. Research pet-friendly accommodation: Before you book your holiday, research pet-friendly accommodation options in the area you plan to visit. Look for holiday lets that don't just welcome dogs but also have convenient amenities, such as nearby walking trails or enclosed outdoor spaces and walks nearby.

  2. Plan your journey: If you're driving to your holiday destination, plan your route and take regular breaks for your dog to stretch their legs and use the bathroom. Bring plenty of water and snacks for your dog, and consider investing in a seatbelt or harness to keep them secure during the journey.

  3. Pack for your dog: Bring everything your dog will need for the trip, such as food, treats, bowls, bedding, and toys. If your dog takes medication, bring enough for the entire trip, and consider packing a first-aid kit for any unexpected injuries or illnesses. It is also worth taking note of the local vet in the area should you need it in an emergency.

  4. Check local beach regulations: Before you arrive at your destination, check for any local restrictions on dogs, such as leash laws or designated off-the-leash areas. Nothing is worse than going on holiday and discovering that all the local beaches don't allow dogs from May to September!

  5. Plan activities together: Plan activities that you can do together with your dog, such as walking the southwest coast path, visiting dog-friendly beaches, or exploring local parks or stately homes and gardens. Research these activities in advance to ensure they suit your dog's breed and fitness level. Nothing is worse than taking your dog on a long coastal walk only to find that they don't want to go any further!

  6. Keep your dog safe: If you're planning on taking a boat trip or two in the South Hams then consider getting your dog a doggie life jacket. And make sure your dog has a collar with identification tags and is microchipped (and with up-to-date details) in case they get lost. If you're in a new and unfamiliar place, keep your dog on a leash to prevent them from getting lost or injured.

  7. Be considerate of others: Remember, not everyone loves dogs as much as you do, so make sure to be considerate of others when you're out and about with your dog. Keep your dog under control, clean up after them, and avoid letting them bark excessively or disturb other guests.

  8. Research local pubs and restaurants: that are dog-friendly and welcome dogs. Luckily most of our local pubs and restaurants are dog friendly in the South Hams and especially around Kingsbridge, Salcombe, Dartmouth and our local Start Point area, making the South Hams a brilliant place to have a holiday with your dog.

We hope these tips will help you have a fun and safe holiday with your dog. Wisteria, Jasmine and Rose Cottages are all based at Lamacraft Farm and welcome dogs.

They are surrounded by 6 acres of garden with sea views across Start Bay. A mile from Start Point Lighthouse and a fifteen-minute walk from the southwest coastal path. Each cottage has an enclosed back courtyard. They make a great holiday base for you and your dog.
